Saving sharks one step at a time.

Hello everyone sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sorry I have not been blogging for a couple of months. But I have some new stuff I want to tell you so sit back and relax and read what I have to say.

Today I'm giving some information and three facts about the sharks and other relatives in the shark family.

"All over the world ocean, sharks are under siege. Every year the nets and hooks of commercial fishing fleets haul up to 100 million sharks, and about 70 million more die after their fins are sliced off. Human activities polluting and even destroying coral reefs and mangrove shallows-and with them go the homes of shark pups.

"To make matters worse, many sharks must grow for 10 to 20 years before they can mate and produce more young. This fact is grim news for sharks, because it means that many more die than are born, so the numbers of these great hunters keep dropping. With so many top predators disappearing, the ocean's natural balance is also in danger."

Shark Fact #1
Fins for Soup: The fishing industry makes plenty of money selling shark fins, which are used in Asian countries for a luxury soup. After the fins are sliced off, the shark is usually tossed back into the sea. Unable to swim, it sinks to the ocean floor and drowns.

Shark Fact #2
Lured by Prey
Sharks may wind up in nets while they are prusuing prey such as tuna and mackerel. Even if a netted shark survives, it may be killed aboard ship or have its valuable fins cut off.

Shark Fact #3
Tangled Up
Commercial fishing boats often use strong monofilament nylon nets that may extend for more than 30 miles. Sharks may not see the fatal net until it is too late.

In a few days I will be presenting a shark presentation in the Grade 2 class. I'm really excited because telling somebody else about the sharks is just really great because then they know what's happening with the sharks and maybe they can help.

Remember sharks aren't scary they are just different!
